The Becoming
Celebrating the 27th reminder to live well and stay happy
In my last post, I wrote about my fears. Today, on the other side of life, I’m thinking less about the shadows and more about who I’m becoming.
Fifteen-year-old me had a list of things my adult self would have achieved.
A clear and thriving career path. Enough money to take one or two trips every year. Good health. Maybe even a family, if I found the right person.
But here I am, twelve years later, firmly in adulthood, realising that dreams take time. Sometimes more time than we bargain for.
Still, they have a way of finding us.
If I learnt anything from twenty-six, it’s that I haven’t reached my elastic limit.
Between the work that takes up most of my time, the money I never seem to have but somehow keep spending on others, the rest I never quite get, the fears I’m slowly summoning the courage to confront, and the breakouts and breakdowns my body seems to love, I know there’s still room for more.
More grace.
More resilience.
More becoming.
That’s how I know adulthood isn’t a destination. It’s an evolution. A lifelong becoming.
Looking back, I achieved some of the goals younger me dreamed about. Oddly enough, reaching them didn’t feel like crossing a finish line. It felt more like standing at a crossroads, wondering where to go next.
But perhaps that’s the beauty of becoming.
There is always another step to take.
Goals become milestones.
What once looked like the end of the journey now feels like a bend in the road, revealing an even bigger landscape ahead. The dreams keep unfolding as I simply keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Twenty-six-year-old Olamide would tell you that twenty-seven is quieter, not because life has become smaller, but because I’ve become more comfortable with silence.
She would tell you that kindness is strength, while people-pleasing is weakness.
She is less certain about the destinations fifteen-year-old Mide imagined because she has caught a glimpse of a much bigger picture.
The milestones that would have meant the world to her younger self are, to her now, simply stepping stones towards infinite possibilities.
A speck beneath a limitless sky full of stars.
God willing.
Then she would turn to the eager fifteen-year-old within and remind her that her dreams are not impossible, they’re simply taking their time.
The path is set.
The road is paved.
And when the time comes, she will walk it with grace, shoulders held high, knowing that she was never behind.
She was becoming.
Happy Birthday Eledumare’s Masterpiece🤍🎂
