Don't Let Go
Opportunity may come more than once, but you should never let it slip your grasp. Not even once.
The other day, I had the perfect line in my head. It dropped between sleep, and I couldn’t write it down because fifteen minutes of sleep was a greater priority. Lord knows I needed it. Sadly, the line is gone; no matter how hard I try, it won’t return.
Isn’t that how life is?
We get an instinct to act on something, but for varying reasons, we put it off until the “best time.” We see things that look perfect and try to commit them to memory only to forget. It is very similar to water seeping out of our palms when, in truth, the water should be kept in leak-proof containers and never in our palms. A famous saying tells us that if we love something, we should let it go; if it comes back, it is yours, and if it doesn’t, it was never meant to be.
I have battled with this saying for years; it sounds so wrong, yet many swear by it. They say it’s nature's way to let something go and let it find its way back. As a lover of nature, I am tempted to agree, but as a force of nature, I believe nature is subject to my will and actions.
Nature forces me to forget even the very things I would love to remember, so I journal. Nature wipes the faces of loved ones from my memory, and I forget the good times we spent together, so I take pictures and make videos to freeze those moments in time. I understand that letting go might be beneficial and help me appreciate things more, but why waste another second? After all, every second counts.
-Excerpt from the book “Thoughts beneath the scars” by Adriana Mastrogiovanni
Tell me if my thought process is faulty, but I believe that if I love something, I should hold it down; when next I get a perfect line- whether in between sleep or the busiest day- I should write it down. When you get water, pour it into a cup, and when you love, do so wholeheartedly.
This doesn’t mean we should live in haste; wisdom is profitable to direct. Think your actions through and weigh your options carefully, but whenever you are caught between letting go without reason and holding tight for the greater good, promise me that you will hold on tight. And like the words from a favourite song of mine by Lee Ann Womack, “If you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance.” You do not have to be the best at it; you only need to do it. No excuses, no procrastination.
Let’s continue this conversation in the comments. I’d love to know if you agree with me on this one.
